It gives an idea of simple initiatives, like Projectactive, that relate to sport & physical activity,
and have a great impact on the people around us.

There's also a fun pic of what it looks like to be stuck in desert quicksand,
then attempt to run barefoot with heavy sneakers in hand on the first day of a race
(your pack is still 16+lbs !).

When you're relaxed & having fun -- at the top of your game, thinking you'll easily come close to first place -- & everything is pulled out from under you ...
miraculous things may just happen...

The next day of the race, there was not a lot of hope.
I'd slept all night in a headstand, a complete headstand
rather than simply putting feet up the tent wall -- usually I do this at least once in a race.
How do you drain legs after they lose their mind in waist-deep sand, then run+walk for 6.5 hours instead of 4, while being sucked dry and cast into an armour of mud?

There was also no fear. Body just unleashed -- bringing in a 3.30 time, one of my fastest marathons in a 6-day race in desert terrain+heat+carrying a pack. It was beautiful.

There's always a great moment.
CHECK out the post "ARE you a MultiStage racer or Enthusiast?" nxt page.
Moments before, I'd come upon fellow racer Ben sprawled across an oasis (2 trees that suddenly appear)
looking at the sky, considering quitting (many had - it was a severe heat wave warning in the Sahara)
and then we zoom along (just embue that into the photo) until the finish. The landscape - like the moon.

If one were judging solely on appearances, then the petite 8-year Sports Center member Chrissie Evans doesn’t seem the type to participate in grueling 150+ mile multi-stage races across some of the most unforgiving terrain and environmental conditions on earth. Yet, this soft-spoken articulate young woman with a slight build, delicate features and short blond hair has completed eight official multi-stage races, in regions including the Sahara and Gobi deserts, Corsica, the Rockies, Egypt and Australia.

Though, in full disclosure, the multi-race in the Rockies was shortened to about 120 miles for insurance reasons because, “there was too much bear activity.” But, the multi-stage unpredictability is one aspect that attracts Chrissie, who finds herself more relaxed in these competitions where “there are so many unknowns, so much out of your control.”

Chrissie began her foray into endurance events in high school when she competed in long distance swims. In college, she played tennis and continued to swim. Her first ultra-long run was in 1997 when she ran across the trapezoidally-shaped landlocked South Asian country of Nepal… and then back again. But, it was only 5 years ago, at the age of 27, that Chrissie began officially participating in multi-stage races.

Most of the stages consist of 26.2 (a full marathon) mile days with one “long” day averaging between 50 and 70 miles. Some of these multi-stage races are deemed “self- sufficient,” which means that runners are required to carry all of their gear with them, provided only with water along the course and a tent at night. But, with experience, Chrissie has gotten the weight of her pack down from22 to 16 pounds, a significant advantage for a 150-mile trek.

As one might imagine, training for such exhaustive endurance events requires a great deal of dedication and commitment. Chrissie trains at the Sports Center health club 4-6 times a week, revealing that “It’s my peaceful time of day, particularly with the natural light.”

While Chrissie takes advantage of all that the Sports Center offers, including strength training equipment and classes such as Interval Box with Pam and Ab Lab with John, you’ll rarely see her running.

In order to prevent injury, she maintains a schedule of heavy cross training and relatively low mileage. And, the mileage she does is mostly on park trails, such as at Rockefeller Park in Sleepy Hollow. According to Chrissie, the terrain on the trails most simulates the multi-stage races, saying that, “You need strength. You need stability on the trails.” She also trains with a pack to further imitate racing conditions, explaining, “I love how strong I feel [with the pack].My core gets very strong and I don’t want to run without it.”

While the Sports Center is ripe with a variety of group classes and programs for team training, its large open atmosphere is also conducive to individual focus. Training is Chrissie’s “quiet time,” as she explains, “I like to train alone. I don’t thrive under the bootcamp mentality.”

It is the solitude and tranquility of multi-stage races that draws Chrissie to the experience, as she describes parts of the Sahara as a “lunar landscape” and to be there is “like you’re on the moon.”

The scenery might be beautiful, but Chrissie admires it on the run. Although she loves the races, she readily admits, “I want the stage to be over, especially when it’s 128 degrees!”

For those who know distance runners, modesty is a commonly shared trait and Chrissie’s demeanor doesn’t deviate from this suitable stereotype. In fact, she claims that running a multi-stage race is “easier than a marathon because the marathon is about speed.”

As one of the few females who competes in multi-races at a high level, Chrissie says that these races are “more about mental strength and I’m better in tougher situations. I take a couple of days to get going.”Multi-races are undoubtedly arduous endeavors that require a mental and physi- cal tenacity that a select few, including Chrissie Evans, possess.

The Sports Center provides a place where Chrissie can cultivate the strength she needs to complete these races and an environment where she finds the calm to complement her disposition.

In Sydney I was lucky enough to train some guys from Ernst&Young. I also gave seminars at Sydney companies about MultiStage running. There are many fast-moving executives interested in the events but Australia's location makes it difficult to get real info and access to the global races. Here's Giles from E&Y who is venturing off to his first MDS race this year. We fixed his pack, so it no longer choked him with the weight!...sorted out some clothing, heat and food issues...so hopefully he and the guys will have great races and return with incredible stories..inspiring others to come along.
As yet, only a dozen Aussies venture overseas to the various races. I was invited to speak at the Terrigal Trotters meeting on a few consecutive Saturdays after their longer training run. Even though Trotters is a 'fun' running club in a small beach town, it is managed by a committee of renowned Australian runners, has over 500 members, a detailed newsletter written by a former New York reporter and many members who have done over 100 runs. No wonder..Terrigal is surrounded by forests and pristine beaches including Terrigal's main beach which stretches for 6 miles. It also has crystal clear baby surf, which I love. Hopefully see more of the Trotters at the upcoming races at the end of the year.

Chrissiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01941765293476989444noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4527791620589855870.post-27830013967478445112007-02-15T02:01:00.000-08:002015-10-27T23:50:09.208-07:00Corsica Coast MultiStage race
October 27 2007. I’ll be attending the Race around Corsica, 6 stages around the coast of Corsica’s mountainous Mediterranean island. South of France, 40min from Paris. Last year’s race attracted Europe’s 100K champion, a professional Moroccan runner with 3rd and 5th MDS placings and French runners with top 10 MDS placings…and me. I was looking for a challenge. I was concerned about the race only requiring a hydration pack, providing hotels at night and even lobster for dinner! Some people quietly reminded me it may also be a ‘very French’ race with little interest in English, and the race website details are mostly in French.
The race was one of the fastest I’ve taken part in, with lightning runners and I emerged stronger than ever. Massages each day and a great course strengthened my body unlike any race before. 175 Km over 6 stages. Far too many prizes at the finish line. One of the most reasonable entry fees. At $1000 less than most MultiStage races, you still get return airfare from Paris, all accommodation and food. One of my stories is coming out in a US magazine in late April.
I’m pretty passionate about every aspect of the race and am the English contact for US, Canada, Australia-Asia regions. I’ve already got a group together for this year’s 2007 event. I’d love you to join us. There are currently only 8 slots available. Like many of the prestigious MultiStage races, they limit the participants to 100 competitors. Here's Corsica's Napoleon Bonaparte looking over me after the Stage over the mountain.
If you’re stuck in your office the few weeks beforehand, you can simply view it as a great break for training. The race also offers an Accompagnant package for those partners and friends who want to enjoy Corsica while walking a shorter distance or hanging out. Some of these areas are totally inaccessible without permits, and whether it’s the Mediterranean views, superb athletes or local food on a deserted beach…it’s an incredible time!

2012: It's been so long since I looked at this blog - everything goes into my magazine articles...sometimes there would be 5 on just one race/adventure, so there was little oomph to repeat it here :) and of course, many details you never repeat!
But this Corsica race still wows me + want to clarify some of the above---
this race was one of the most perfect races, perfect training for MDS or other Sahara races. yes, I was the only english speaker+that was one of the best parts!
yes, I was one of few females.
yes, I did officially win the final stage,
the only explanation is that the speedy Moroccans allowed me to win :)
Running beside Lhoucine, and others, was beautiful. They invited me to train with them for the months leading up to MDS, an offer I'm yet to take up.
I also saw that I may one day trade my high-end sport mix for a chocolate croissant each morning, like the 100K champion...not brave enough yet.
And it was fun to see that taking a big leap can always work---I had my one+only injury from endurance sports, 6 months before this race, a hefty injury that put me in a wheelchair for 5 weeks+3 weeks crutches with a tattoo of black bruising from the chest down. Moving an inch took my breath away, juggernauts of pain receptors firing. Didnt mention any of this in the magazine articles as didn't want to take away from the fact that endurance sports can look after your body---how many of the 40 and 50 year olds look amazing!---that injury was an unlucky accident, a large trip down a 15mile mountainside. Foot doctors didn't think I'd run again, not more than a casual jog. I'd already committed to the Corsica race so I told them I'd just turn up, maybe run the first day. I started pool walking (not running, due to pain! and caution) 4 months before the race. My first run on land was 5 minutes, and could have stopped at 3. I did one long run training before the race. At Corsica, my body just snapped into it, forgetting what it thought it could do, and just doing what was required. It was relaxed, happy, and just let it happen, 6 days and out in the front pack. Bodies are amazing when you get out of their way :)
The races have been called the Tour de France of running. The events attract top athletes and professional marathoners to CEOs and high-achieving professionals of all ages, from all over the world.
A typical race format is 150miles over 6 stages. Most races require self-sufficiency. You carry everything you need to survive, all your gear and food in your pack. Only water and a place in a tent are provided. Some races simply require carrying a hydration pack, which leads to different race strategies and a much faster race.
For me, this is one of the ultimate endurance sports. The events inspire people, highlight our natural world and bring cultures together. I love peoples’ stories, the tough and beautiful terrain, peacefulness and pure fun. I spent a couple of years creating similar athletic endeavours across Nepal for myself and others.
The MultiStage events now bring me into contact with some incredible people and athletes around the world. Many of us know the Marathon Des Sables or RTP series but there are several global series out there. I hope to get to some of the most prestigious and intriguing races in 2007/8 and make over 1.5 million foot steps in races alone. You too?
Lately, the run is about three times a week along Vagator beach, India. (For one month each year I set up office/life there.) A very short run, but great for form and drills; also bypassing the odd holy cow and viewing the tourists doing yoga or european exercises at the other end.
A tougher fiercer event is dancing all night in heat of Asian tropics, and Dance at your own risk :)... my newfound traveler friend is wearing down...
